Retro gear

March 7th, 2008 Posted in Equipment

I’ve come across some older gear in pristine condition. Both are twin lens reflex cameras. The first one is a Yashika MAT-124. The second is an old Rolleiflex. I have no plans on using these but they are pretty cool to look at. I’m pretty sure if I loaded up some film that these would both work. Like I said, these are in mint condition.

UPDATE (3/9): The Rolleiflex is an Automat MX-EVS from 1954-56 and the Yashica 124-Mat LM is from 1958 - Thanks to Mike from nikoncafe.com for dating them for me.

I wouldn’t dare use either one of these old cameras because you stand a definite risk of being unsatisfied with your digital equipment. It was always my hope of owning the Rolli but I did own the Yashica. Trust me: Both are extremely capable cameras.

Are you considering selling them? To me? :-) Heh heh. I wonder what they’d fetch on eBay though… Surely you’ve been curious enough to check, right?

If these used a little small piece of their film, such as 35mm, then the finest digital equipment could match the quality.

Being that these burn a 6×6cm square of film, digital won’t come anywhere near the quality or the resolution of either of these cameras for another 10 or more years.

I’d suggest getting them both CLA’d and load a roll of Fuji Provia into each one. Buy a meter if you need one.

Seeing properly exposed 6×6 “slides” the first time could prove a ‘life-altering’ event.

Like a Canadian band once sang, “You ain’t seen nothing yet…”
