Black and White…with a bit of color

February 10th, 2007 Posted in People

Last summer I took the photo below at the wedding of some good friends. The photographer had them pose for the shot and I stepped in to take a couple. I have Photoshop 7 and have just started to get comfortable with a few things in it. Using the magnetic lasso and a the healing brush - where the lasso didn’t lasso all that well - I isolated the flowers and got a pretty good shot overall.

This was shot with my old 24-85mm 3.5-4.5 G @ 4.5, 1/320.

In CS2/CS3, the way to do it would be to create an adjustment layer, desaturate (perhaps using the channel mixer, if that’s possible), then punch through the mask to show the flowers.

I tried using layers - via the channel mixer and also the saturation/hue option with a little success. The problem is their fingernails have a bit of pink in them that still shows up.

RIght, then you mask the flowers so the saturation adjustment layer doesn’t affect them. What I mean is:

Layer 1 is the Picture. Layer 2 is the saturation adjustment layer with a mask over the flowers so that the (de)saturation affects everything but the flowers. Just select the flowers and create the mask.
